Monmouth led most of the way, but couldn't hold off Beloit on the Bucs' home court, falling 63-62 when Beloit's last-second shot found its mark.
Â
The Scots jumped out to a 16-10 lead in the first half on
Jonathan Oradiegwu's traditional 3-point play. Beloit quickly responded to knot the game minutes later before Monmouth's 11-3 run late in the first half opened up an eight-point lead. Beloit gave a preview of the finish when they cut the margin to six with 54 seconds left in the first half and then converted a Monmouth turnover into a 3-pointer to cut their deficit to 34-31 at the break.
Â
Monmouth maintained their edge in the second half, leading by as many as nine on
Trey Swearingen's 3-pointer midway through the half. Beloit again rallied, first cutting the margin to four on a three and then climbing within two on a bucket inside with 2:51 to play. The Bucs regained the lead less than a minute later on another 3-ball, but
Will Carius' jumper pushed Monmouth back into the lead at 62-61 with 55 seconds left. A steal by Carius on the Bucs' next possession with 36 seconds left nearly iced the game, but the Bucs pulled a defensive board off a Monmouth miss as the shot clock wound down and then took the game with the final bucket with one second left.
Â
Carius finished with a team-high 23 points and
D.J. Swift added 12.
