Neither team led by more than eight points and in the end Monmouth's 75-68 loss to the Milwaukee School of Engineering came down to the final seconds.
Â
Trailing 69-63 with just over two minutes left in the game,
Will Carius drained a 3-pointer to cut the margin in half. Another Carius bucket, this one in the lane, closed the gap to 69-68 with 1:23 to play, but that would be as close as the Scots would get after the Raiders made good on a Jason Palesse free throw with 1:09 remaining and then iced the game in the final 30 seconds on a Travis Ballard three and a layup by Matthew Kirmse.
Â
Monmouth had taken a 38-32 lead on the half, but MSOE chipped away in the final 20 minutes to offset a 21-point, 14-rebounD effort from Carius.
Justin Batterton chipped in with 13 points and
D.J. Swift added 10.
