Monmouth's bid for their third straight Midwest Conference Championship came up short in Wisconsin after a 10-7 loss to St. Norbert in the title game Saturday afternoon.
The Green Knights made two early scores stand up in the rematch of last year's overtime championship match in Monmouth. St. Norbert opened the scoring with a pick-six on the Scots' first possession and added a field goal after forcing the Scots to punt on their next possession in the first quarter. St. Norbert threatened to add another score before the half, but
Mason Castricone's interception in the end zone with 53 seconds left in the half thwarted the drive.
The Scots got on the board when
Hayden Nelson hit
Yansay Williams for an 82 yard touchdown with 3:28 left in the third period to trim the deficit to 10-7. That would end the scoring on the day as the Knights' forced six Monmouth turnovers and picked up a critical first down in the final minute to ice the game.
Nelson threw for 156 yards – 88 and one TD to Williams – while
DeAndre Wright churned out 82 rushing yard.
Clark Gaden led the defense with 12 tackles – all solos.
