It was only fitting on Senior Night at Glennie Gym that Monmouth senior
Ali Gustafson would record the final kill in a 3-0 win over age-old rival Knox in the season finale for both teams.
Â
Gustafson – who threw down a game-high 15 kills and hit .464 – scored the final point as the Scots rolled to a 25-13, 25-23, 25-17 win in just over an hour. Monmouth used a balanced attack as four other attackers –
Lauren Sperry,
Riley Cook,
Ashley Farris and the Scots' other senior
Brooke Decker – nailed eight kills each.
Â
Tied at 8-8 in the opening set, the Scots reeled off 15 of the next 19 points and scored the winning point on a Farris kill. Monmouth could get no separation in Set 2 and trailed 22-21 until Gustafson's kill tied it and
Laura Dulee's ace serve put Monmouth ahead for good. Dulee served up back-to-back aces and after the Fire broke serve, Cook drained the set-ending kill.
Â
The Scots broke loose in the final set when they began to pull away with the match tied at 11-all. A kill by Gustafson and back-to-back winners from Farris opened Monmouth's lead to 16-12 lead before the Fire pulled within 17-14, but never topped the Scots.
Â
Monmouth – which hit .297 – finished the season with an impressive 7-3 mark at Glennie Gym.
