Monmouth rolled up more than 350 yards of offense in the first half of a 51-0 blanking of Cornell Saturday afternoon at April Zorn Memorial Stadium.
The Scots used a big-play offense, scoring on just their third play of the game when
Hayden Nelson hit
Jacolby Maxwell for a 51-yard touchdown pass.
Yansay Williams hauled in a 30-yard TD reception as Monmouth scored on their second and every possession of the first half to take a 44-0 lead into the locker room. Nelson finished the day with an 11-of-14 effort for 223 yards and three TDs, two to Maxwell who caught four throws for 112 yards. Freshman back
Devin Lawrence got in on the scoring act in the third quarter when
Brennan White found Lawrence for a 49-yard TD toss.
Monmouth finished with 445 yards of offense while the defense recorded their fourth shutout of the season, allowing the Rams just 109 yards as
Levi Oliveto led the charge with nine total tackles. The Scots' defensive unit turned in 16 tackles for loss and recovered a Rams fumble at the Monmouth 12 yard line in the final seconds to preserve the shutout.
The win sets up next Saturday's showdown of the top two teams still unbeaten in the Midwest Conference South Division when Lake Forest visits April Zorn Memorial Stadium for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
