Box Score 2 They came up short in the main singles draw, but Monmouth's
Rachel Leifheit and
Natalie Curtis battled through the back draw to take the consolation crowns at the Midwest Conference Singles Championships Sunday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis.

Leifheit was knocked into the consolation side of the No. 4 singles bracket after dropping her opening match to fourth-seeded Megan Pope of Cornell 1-6, 6-2, 6-1. The junior then steamrollered her way to the consolation title with an 8-0 win over Madelyn Deardorff of Illinois College in the semis and finished the run with an 8-1 win over Beloit's Emma Hahn for the No. 4 consolation title.

Curtis, who won the No. 6 consolation bracket a year ago, mirrored her doubles partner's singles journey. Playing at No. 5 singles this season, Curtis won her first set, but dropped the next two in her opening match. Cornell's Emmaline Fievet sent Curtis into the consolation bracket, downing the senior 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. Curtis had no trouble getting by Jamahara Richardson of Knox 8-0 in the semifinals before cruising past Ripon's MacKenzie Warner in the consolation championship 8-2.

Playing at No. 6 singles,
Lexi Tibbs nearly made it a 4-5-6 sweep of the consolation side, but fell in the consolation title match. Tibbs was sent to the consolation bracket after falling in straight sets in her opening match to No. 2 seeded Janice Elkerton of Cornell. Tibbs edged Beloit's Maria Bieberitz 8-5 in the consolation semis before falling in the consolation championship to Ripon's Katelyn Peroutka.

Monmouth's No. 1 singles player
Emma Johanns got off to a fast start in her opener, defeating Beloit's Hayden Lanphere in straight sets. Johanns was subsequently eliminated from the tournament in the quarterfinals by Grinnell's Abby Nielsen – the top seed and eventual runner up – in straight sets.

McKenzie DeVilder at No. 2 and
Haley Johnston at No. 3 were each bumped into the consolation bracket with first round losses. Each fell in straight sets, DeVilder to Ripon's Hannah Ryback and Johnston to Bailey Ekstrand of Beloit. DeVilder was eliminated from the tournament with a narrow 8-6 loss to Sally Hixon of Illinois College in the consolation semis. Johnston suffered a similar fate with an 8-5 consolation semifinal loss to Samantha Kiesner of Ripon.

On Saturday, Leifhiet and Curtis – Monmouth's No. 2 doubles team – made the deepest run in the league's doubles tournament advancing to the semifinals before being eliminated by the eventual champions. The tandem ground out a 9-8 win over their St. Norbert competition in the quarterfinals, edging the fourth-seeded Green Knights by taking the tiebreaker 10-5. Monmouth's duo was eliminated in the semifinals 8-2 by eventual No. 2 doubles champion and top seeded Lake Forest.

Seeded eighth in No. 1 doubles, Johanns and DeVidler dropped their opening match to ninth-seeded Lawrence 8-0 and moved into the consolation bracket. Fifth-seeded Ripon - the consolation champion – eliminated the Scots' tandem 8-1.

Johnston and Tibbs were seeded sixth in No. 3 doubles and were defeated in the quarterfinals by third-seeded Cornell 8-4. Monmouth's pair dropped into the consolation bracket where they were eliminated by seventh-seeded Ripon 8-2.
