Box Score In the end, it came down to free throws in Monmouth's 55-46 loss at Grinnell Tuesday night.
Â
The Scots stayed even with the Pioneers for nearly the entire 40Â minutes, but Grinnell's 17-8 free throw advantage provided the winning margin for the hosts.
Â
Trailing 23-17 at the half, the Scots immediately cut into the Pioneers lead on a
Jeni Crain 3-pointer. A pair of free throws from
Maddie Dohleman and an
Izy Todd jumper gave the Scots a 24-23 lead less than two minutes into the third quarter.
Â
Grinnell countered, eventually taking a 39-28 lead early in the fourth quarter. Monmouth stayed on the offensive with back-to-back layups from
Keri Dodson and a
Rebecca Gallis 3-pointer as the Scots closed to within five at 51-46 with 1:13 to play, but that would be as close as the Scots would come despite a 13-point night from Crain and 10 each from Dohleman and Gallis.
Â
Monmouth will host St. Norbert Saturday at 1 p.m.
