Box Score Monmouth made it a season sweep of Grinnell Tuesday night with a 118-111 win over the Pioneers, becoming the first team this season to defeat the Pioneers on their home court.
Â
Jon Matthews came off the bench to pump in a team-high 34 points and pull down 11 rebounds as the Scots stayed in contention for a Midwest Conference Tournament berth. Monmouth held a lead as large as 26 points early in the second half, but had to fight off a Pioneer rally.
Â
Grinnell slowly chipped away with a barrage of 3-pointers and free throws to cut Monmouth's lead to 100-92 with 4:50 to play. The Scots responded with a
Justin Aluya layup and another by Matthews to push their lead back to double digits.
Â
The Pioneers climbed within three possessions in the final minute, but the Scots again held off the threat when
Will Jones sank a pair of free throws with 32 seconds left and two Matthews' free throws iced the game with eight seconds left.
Â
Jones joined Matthews with a double-double of 18 points and 11 boards as six Scots scored in double figures.
Â
Monmouth will host St. Norbert Saturday at 3 p.m.
