Box Score Monmouth put five in double figures, but came up just a point short in a 97-96 loss to Eureka at Glennie Gym.
Â
Trailing by four, 97-93 with four seconds left and the length of the floor to go, the Scots nearly pulled out the improbable when Austin Holman was fouled while draining a 3-pointer as the horn sounded to make it 97-96. Holman's ensuing free throw which would have tied the contest was waived off on a lane violation, ultimately giving Eureka the win.
Â
The Scots had led for most of the first half before the Red Devils gained the edge in the final five minutes of the half with a 9-2 run. Monmouth chipped away in the second half, regaining the momentary lead at 87-86 on two of Lamont Mitchell's team-high 22 points. After a pair of Eureka free throws to knot the game at 87-all, Justin Aluya made one of two from the line to stake the Scots to an 88-87 lead. Eureka then hit eight free throws and a jumper over the final 90 seconds to stave off the Scots.
Â
Joining Mitchell in double figures were Will Jones who dumped in 18 points, Holman finished with 10, Aluya 14 and Justin Batterton came off the bench to pump in 14.
