Box Score Monmouth was unlucky in a game that featured 13 lead changes when Beloit eked out a 63-61 win over the Scots.
The teams traded the lead throughout the game before Beloit began to pull away with 13 minutes left in regulation. The Scots quickly responded when
Justin Aluya's jumper and a 3-pointer from
Will Jones sparked Monmouth's 15-4 run to take the lead at 49-48 with 7:23 to play. Neither team led by more than four the rest of the way.
A pair of
Lamont Mitchell free throws with a minute remaining pulled Monmouth within two at 62-60. Monmouth had a chance to tie when Beloit failed to score over the next two possessions.
Paul Engo III pulled the defensive board on the Bucs' final miss and was fouled in the act of shooting with three seconds to play. Engo hit one of two free throws to pull Monmouth within 62-61. The Scots immediately fouled on the inbound play,sending Beloit to the line.
The Bucs made good on the first free throw, but missed the second as Jones pulled his seventh board of the game. Beloit held on by forcing a turnover with less than a second remaining.
Aluya led all scores with 20 points while Jones and Mitchell added 16 apiece.
Monmouth travels to Grinnell, Iowa, Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. contest with the Pioneers.
