MEN HANG ON TO FOURTH IN MWC DESPITE IOWA SETBACK

Box Score The Fighting Scots opened the early week Midwest Conference game with a fast start before falling 94-77 at Cornell, but remained in fourth place in the Midwest Conference despite the midweek setback.

The Scots built a lead of 10 points in the first half on the back of 93.8 percent free-throw shooting (15-16). Monmouth gained their first 10-point edge with a pair of Will Jones' free throws with 6:55 left in the opening frame as Jones posted 11 points and four rebounds in the first 20 minutes..

Then a cold streak, mirroring the weather outside, found the Scots who found themselves trailing at the break after the Rams found their range and tightened the defense, forcing the Scots into nine turnovers and holding them to 34 percent shooting from the floor, including a 1-for-11 mark from 3-point range.

With four minutes left in the half, the Rams began an 11-2 run to give them the lead heading into the break, 39-38. Cornell guard Corey Davis posted 14 points and was the catalyst for the Rams late run to conclude the half.

The Fighting Scots rallied with multiple runs in the second half, but each time the Rams answered. The score would change hands nine times, including six ties, before a late Cornell offensive spark would lead to their sixth Midwest Conference victory.

Three different Rams would post double-digits including Craig Engle and Corey Davis combining for 59 points. As a team, Cornell shot 59.6 percent from the field, including nearly 50 percent from three to the tune of 8-17.

The Rams led in points in the paint with 40 and forced 18 Fighting Scots turnovers, leading to 27 points off of turnovers.

Will Jones led the Scots in scoring with 22 points as Andrew Mathison pitched 12 of his own.

The Scots, now 9-6 in Midwest Conference play, come home to the friendly confines of Glennie Gymnasium for a 2 p.m. game against the Beloit Buccaneers (8-12, 6-9).
