The Scots held the Pioneers – known for their frenetic pace and barrage of 3-pointers – to just 11-of-56 from 3-point range.

Trailing 54-51 at the half, Monmouth's defense tightened in the final 20 minutes, holding Grinnell to a miniscule 3-of-27 on their staple shot. The Scots in the meantime were canning nearly three-quarters of their field goals, taking just one 3-point while scoring 72 points in the paint.

Will Jones – whose layup with 9:02 left in the game gave Monmouth a double-digit lead they would not relinquish – led a balanced offense with 17 points as six Scots scored in double figures.
