Matt Barnes recorded 25 tackles - both Monmouth program records - but it wasn't quite enough for the Scots who fell in the first round of the NCAA playoffs 21-14 at Coe.

Tanner Matlick hit Maxwell with a 69-yard scoring pass with 6:23 left in the opening quarter to break the ice in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Coe then took advantage of one of nine Monmouth turnovers in the game to knot the score at 7-7 with 5:07 left in the first half. Monmouth threatened just before the half, but the Kohawks intercepted a deflected pass to end the threat.

The Kohawks, who racked up 263 yards on the ground – 253 from the nation's No. 2 ground-gain Trevor Heitland – took the lead in the third quarter with a nine-yard pass play with 3:30 left in the frame. Heitland scored his lone TD – a 46-yard TD run – as the third period wound down to give the Kohawks a two-TD lead.

The Scots engineered a furious fourth-quarter, pulling within a TD with, a four-play, 76-yard score capped by
Alec Dutko's catch of a seven-yard Matlick pass. Monmouth's final drive ended on downs in the final minute to close the season at 10-1.
