Box Score Victory on the boards provided another mark in the win column for Monmouth which not only out rebounded Cornell to the tune of 45-29, but outscored the Rams 64-55 in the midweek contest.
Â
For the second consecutive game in a row, the Fighting Scots have held their opponents leading scorer well below their season average and Tuesday's game followed suit. Holding point guard Corey Davis to only 14 points on 5-12 shooting, the Scots defense locked down allowing Cornell to only shoot 39.1 percent for the game.
Â
The first half spark came from freshman
Lamont Mitchell who pitched in 5 points, before stumbling into foul trouble. Sophomore
Will Jones picked up where Mitchell left off helping the Scots head into the break with a two point advantage, 27-25 shooting 80 percent from the foul line and hitting a layup with 44 seconds left in the half to break a 25-25 tie.
Â
In the second half, the Scots continued to battle as senior big man
Matt Juhola pitched in 7 points and two rebounds. Before the final buzzer sounded, the lead would change hands nine different times. Once again, Jones got it going for the Scots adding 14 more to finish the game with 19 points, four assists, and six rebounds, but it was senior
Ross Langlois who came off the bench to help the Scots ice the game in the final minute. After the Rams cut Monmouth's lead to six at 61-55 with 54 seconds left, Jones was fouled and sank the first of his two free throw attempts. Cornell rebounded the miss, but Langlois picked the Rams pocket and then sank a pair of free throws for the final margin.
Â
As a team, the Scots poured in 18 points off of turnovers, 22 points from the bench, and 28 points in the paint.

With the Midwest Conference victory, the Scots improve to 6-3 in conference, 8-4 overall. This weekend the Fighting Scots head back up north to face Ripon College who is tied for fourth with the Scots at 6-3. Tip-off is at 1pm.
