Box Score Monmouth scored early and then let the defense roll in a 2-1 win over Cornell to open Midwest Conference play Saturday afternoon.
 
Zeb Soignier punched in the Scots' scores to give Monmouth the early lead. Daniel Guzman fed Soignier off a Corner Kick in the 18^th minute for the first tally. Luke Vandenberg then found Soignier for his second goal just six minutes later to give Monmouth a 2-0 lead.
 
Cornell came back with 10 minutes left in the first half, scoring an unassisted goal to cut Monmouth's lead to 2-1 with the Rams only shot of the first half.
 
Monmouth's defense held in the second half when the Rams ripped nine shots, putting five on goal.
