Men clip Bucs at end to jockey for position in MWC Tourney

Box Score Andrew Mathison's layup broke a 58-58 tie with 1:07 left as Monmouth posted a 62-59 win at Beloit to regain sole possession of second place in the Midwest Conference.

The Scots had led by double figures in the first half, but the Bucs rallied to knot the game at 24-all at halftime. Monmouth never trailed in the first half, despite hitting just 9-of-30 shots from the floor.

The teams traded the lead 12 times over the final 20 minutes as neither team led by more the four in the second half. With 5:21 to play and Monmouth leading 50-49, the teams traded the lead or tied over the next 10 possessions until Mathison's bucket and a free throw by Cole Jackson gave the Scots a small cushion.

Monmouth held the Bucs to just one point in the final minute following Mathison's bucket. He finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Reed Goodbred led Monmouth with 19.

The win moved the Scots into sole possession of second place in the MWC by virtue of holding the tie-breaker advantage over Ripon after Grinnell dropped into fourth following a 101-94 loss to Lake Forest. Two games remain in the regular season.
