Playing through nine lead changes and trailing 114-113 with 7:16 left,
Andrew Mathison pulled a rebound off of a missed free throw and found Blea open for a short-range jumper to give the Scots the lead for good at 115-114. Mathison then pulled a defensive board on the Pioneers' ensuing possession and hit
Lamont Mitchell on a fast break for a layup to increase the Scots' lead to 117-114.

Grinnell continued their torrid pace of play, scoring a layup-and-one to trim the margin to one at 122-121 with 4:33 left before the Scots pulled away. Another Blea bucket and two free throws from Mathison upped the Scots lead to five as the Scots began a 10-0 run in the game's final four minutes. A dunk by Mathison and a pair of Blea free throws stretched the Scots lead to 11, the biggest advantage of the night, with 2:29 remaining.

Monmouth, which hit 52-of-70 from the floor, hit just enough of their free throws in the final minute to hold on for the win as Mitchell went 8-for-8 from the line on the way to a 24 night.
Ben Friday pumped in 21 points on 10-of-11 shooting while coming off the bench. Mathison and
Jon Calhoun added 10 each for the Scots.

The win moved Monmouth into fifth in the Midwest Conference through the first month of the season.
