Box Score Monmouth overcame a sluggish first half to post a 63-50 come-from-behind win over UW-Stout in the opening game of the Wartburg Tournament.
The Scots connected on just eight of their 31 first half shots, but scorched the net after halftime, hitting 56 percent from the floor to come back from a 27-17 deficit.
Lamont Mitchell's steal and layup at the 13:53 mark sparked Monmouth to a 12-0 run. A pair of
Will Jones free throws with 7:08 left in the game gave Monmouth their first lead since the 17:24 mark of the first half.
After Stout countered with a 3-pointer to regain the lead,
Andrew Mathison went inside with a bucket, knotting the game at 47-47 with 5:55 remaining. The Scots then got free throws from Mathison,
Jon Calhoun and
Riley Blea to take the lead for good.
Nursing a 57-58 lead with 1:39 to play, the Scots hit three of their next four shots to ice the game.
Calhoun led the charge with 22 points, Blea added 21 and Mathison chipped in with 10.
Monmouth will play in the championship game Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
