Box Score The initial minutes of the Fighting Scots men's basketball season was tightly fought before pulling away for a 101-71 win over Eureka. The Scots battled back and forth with the Eureka Red Devils at Glennie Gymnasium in the Scots' season-opener as Eureka played their third game in four days.
The Scots perimeter play and outstanding rebounding managed to silence Eureka's sharp shooter Sam Feehan, who managed to net a pair of threes to lead Eureka in scoring with 10 in the first half. Monmouth offset the Devils' leading scorer, finishing the first half on a 22-5 run ignited by a
Will Jones 3-pointer.
Jon Calhoun's back-to-back buckets to end the first 20 minutes gave the Scots a 51-32 lead at intermission.
Calhoun and Jones, combined for 27 points and eleven rebounds in the first half as the Scots were beginning to roll. With a rebounding differential of 32-17, favoring Monmouth, and defensive field goal percentage of 23.3%, the Scots had found a formula for success which they brought to the table in the second half.
Picking up where they left off, Monmouth pushed its lead to 30 on a bucket-and-one from
Justin Aluya before Eureka was able to find an answer and trimmed the lead down to 25 with 4:41 left to play. The lead would never fall below 30 for the remaining 3 minutes.
Jones led five Scots in double figures, connecting on a double-double of 20 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists. Calhoun, a senior point guard, pitched in a 14 point, 5 rebound outing in only 15 minutes of play. Monmouth's three-headed monster in the paint of
Matt Juhola,
Andrew Mathison, and
Ben Friday controlled the lane only allowing 24 inside points on the night and 9 Eureka offensive rebounds.
This weekend the Scots (1-0) will head to Waverly, Iowa, for tournament play opening with the University of Wisconsin- Stout Friday at 6 p.m.
