Box Score The heart attack Scots kept things simple for their coach and the Monmouth College family Saturday, getting out to an early lead in a 41-21 win at Beloit.
The Scot's defense was tasked with controlling the high-powered Beloit offense and they did just that. Forcing three interceptions, two by
Nyle Stevens, the Scots held Beloit to 21 points, two of which came when the Scots held three touchdown leads in the fourth quarter. Throw in two sacks and 6 total tackles for a loss and the Fighting Scots stifling defense looked stunning as they shut down the Buccaneers' offense.
On the other side of the ball, the good times rolled for the Fighting Scots.
In a game which the Fighting Scots wanted to get back to running the football well, they were able to make good on their wish. The "rushing by committee" strategy worked out well for the Scots who rushed for 298 yards as a team. Highlighted by
Tanner Shafer's 117 yard, two touchdown performance and
DeAndre Wright's 89 yards, the Fighting Scots had a terrific one-two punch out of the backfield.
Under center,
Tanner Matlick controlled the game well for the Scots going 12-21, 180 yards through the air capped off by two touchdowns. The first touchdown came on an over the shoulder, corner route to
Brock Thoms. Thoms finished off the day with 4 receptions for 45 yards. Easton Shaber pitched in 5 receptions for 74 yards. The second touchdown pass came on a pass out of the backfield to fullback
Jake Innis who bulldozed over Bucanneers on his way to the end zone.
The Fighting Scots return to April Zorn Memorial Stadium for Homecoming Oct. 10 as they face Illinois College in a 1 p.m. game.
