Box Score The stat line said it all in Monmouth's 38-7 win over Lake Forest Saturday afternoon: Lake Forest - 173 yards of total offense, 25 yards on the ground.
The Scots held the Foresters to 11 possessions of seven plays or less and led 17-7 going into the half after a pair of rushing touchdowns, one a 2-yard rumble from
DeAndre Wright and another from a yard out for
Tanner Matlick. Tack on
Danny Muzzalupo's 18-yard field goal and the Fighting Scots never looked back.
The Foresters answered after the Muzzalupo field goal in the first half, cutting the Scots lead to 10-7 with 11:15 left in the second quarter. That four-yard touchdown pass would be on the first, and last, possession in the red zone for Lake Forest.
In the second half, a pair of Fighting Scots bombs lead to points as Matlick found
Adam Parr and
Brock Thoms for 32 and 18 yard touchdowns, respectively.
DeAndre Wright led the Scots attack out of the backfield on 16 touches for 77 yards and a touchdown. Matlick tossed in 45 yards of his own, on the ground, and found the end zone on a one yard quarterback keeper.
Sophomore back
Austin Ray contributed through the air and on the ground finishing with 86 all-purpose yards for a Fighting Scots offense that controlled time and possession, while putting up 38 points.
Tanner Matlick threw for 161 yards and two touchdowns at a 14-21 stent behind the monstrous Scots line that leads the conference in fewest sacks allowed.
Defensively the Scots refused to give an inch. The Fighting Scots took two fumbles away from Lake Forest including a recovery from Tyler Parskey who returned the ball 17 yards for a touchdown. Add eight tackles for a loss, three of which were sacks, and the Scots were rolling on the defensive side of the ball.
Matt Barnes lead the way with nine total tackles next to
Carson Perrero with six.
Monmouth moved to 5-1 on the year and 2-0 in the Midwest Conference South Division, the Foresters dropped to 2-4 and 1-1 in the division.
Next weekend, Monmouth (5-1, 2-0) travels to Cornell (3-3, 2-0) in what will be Monmouth's third straight game battling the division co-leader.
