Box Score Austin Holman pumped in a career-high 17 points as Monmouth broke a small two-game skid with an 81-74 win at Lake Forest.
Holman's 3-pointer with 10:57 left in the second half opened up a 62-48 lead for the Scots before Lake Forest mounted a comeback. The Foresters converted a bucket-and-one, a 3-pointer and then a layup on consecutive possessions to cut Monmouth's lead to 62-56.
Nick Marema gave the Scots a little breathing room after a timeout when his bucket in the paint stretched Monmouth's lead to eight at 64-56. Lake Forest countered again, draining 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions and then knotted the game at 64-64 on a layup with 6:33 remaining.
Monmouth regained the lead for good on a pair of
Andrew Mathison free throws and, after a
Will Jones free throw, stretched the margin back to six on Marema's third 3-pointer of the gamewith 4:10Â left. The Scots then sealed the deal in the final minute sinking 4-of-6 free throws.
Marema, Mathison and
Chad Thompson joined Holman in double digits. Mathison and Thompson poured in 14 each and Marema added 12. The win kept the Scots in second place by two games on the loss side over Ripon and Grinnell. The Scots will host Grinnell Wednesday in a 7 p.m. matchup.
