Men still second in MWC despite frigid second half vs. Fire

Box Score The Scots are nursing a one-game lead for second place in the Midwest Conference after falling in the final seconds at Knox 71-67.

Monmouth roared out to an 18-point lead late in the first half, but went cold in the second half as Knox got a bucket with :02 left in the game to give Monmouth their second straight loss. It was the first back-to-back losses for the Scots since November.

Jon Calhoun's 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the first half put the Scots up 43-31, but Knox chipped away in the final 20 minutes, taking the lead at 47-46 with 13:27 to go to cap a 9-0 run. From there the teams traded the lead with Monmouth taking their final lead on two Andrew Mathison free throws with 1:24 remaining.

A bucket by the Fire's Mitch Murphy with :02 left put Knox ahead 69-67, but a Scots turnover on the inbound play gave the ball back to the Fire. Murphy was then fouled and sank both free throws to ice the game.

Monmouth slipped three games behind St. Norbert in the MWC standings, but has a one-game lead on Ripon and is two better than Lake Forest. The Scots play at Lake Forest Saturday.
