Box Score Monmouth ran their winning streak against Knox to a program-record 16 games with a 33-2 win on a blustery Saturday at April Zorn Memorial Stadium. The series, began in 1888, is the sixth oldest in the NCAA and third longest in Division III.
Â
For the fourth time this season, Monmouth's defense held their opponents to less than 200 yards of offense, limiting the Fire to just 65 yards on the ground and 178 overall while the Scots' offense exploded for 33 points in the final three quarters.
Â
The Fighting Scots got rolling after a scoreless first quarter when C.J. Shield hauled in a seven-yard touchdown pass from
Alec Dutko on the first play of the second quarter. The score followed Shields' 36 yard reception on the previous play to move the Scots down to the Knox seven. Knox blocked the ensuing extra point kick and Armand Stricklan returned it for a defensive score – the Prairie Fires' only score on the day – to make it 6-2 Monmouth.
Â
Monmouth added another score midway through the second quarter as
Trent Rains gained 42 of his game-high 150 yards to set up Dutko's seven-yard TD run.
          Â
Knox countered on the ensuing kickoff and marched 65 yards before the Scots stopped the Fire at the Monmouth one as time ran out in the first half.
Â
Nursing a 13-2 lead into the third quarter, the Scots took their first possession to the Prairie Fire nine before settling for an
Ace Henricks' 25 yard field goal.
Â
KeShon Young tacked on a 13-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter to move the Scots ahead 23-2. Young finished the day with 101 yards on 11 carries.
Â
Monmouth's
Jacob Wilson added to his career interceptions record, picking off Knox's Matt McCaffrey on the Fire's ensuing possession and returning it 21 yards to the Knox 38 to set up another Scots' score. After combining runs by
Austin Ray and an 11-yard pass to
Easton Schaber, the Scots got another field goal from Henricks. His 30-yard boot gave the Scots the final margin at 33-2.
Â
Monmouth will host Carroll next week as part of the Midwest Conference's Championship Week games. The Scots finished second in the South Division after Illinois College completed their sweep of the South with a 30-23 win over Cornell. Carroll took second in the North as newcomer Macalester ran the table in the division.
