Box Score Powered by another defensive gem, the Fighting Scots won at Grinnell for the first time since 2010, positng a 38-3 win over the Pioneers.
Monmouth's defense held the Pioneers to just 194 yards of offense, the third time this season the defense has limited their opponents to less than 200 yards. Defensive tackle
Tyler Parksey led the defense with nine tackles, including 3.5 for loss. The defense allowed just one field goal as time expired in the first half.
While the defense was rocking the Pioneers, Monmouth's offense was rolling, spreading out the runs between four tailbacks -Â
KeShon Young,
Trent Rains,
Michael Buehne and
Austin Ray. The four backs combined for 210 yards and no back rushed for more than 100 yards.
Alec Dutko threw for three touchdowns, hitting CJ Shields with a 49-yarder for the game's first score, then connecting with
Raysean Parker and
Ron Willis. Dutko finished with a career-high 277 yards passing. CJ Shields had a career high four receptions for 130 yards and one touchdown.
After a slow start, Shields and Dutko got rolling with the long TD pass late in the first quarter. Dutko then found Parker with 1:47 left in the first half for a 42 yard TD toss to give the Scots a 14-0 lead.
KeShon Young broke off a 50 yard run on the Scots' first possession of the second half, but a Grinnell interception in the end zone on the next play thwarted the drive. After the defense held Grinnell to a three-an-out, Young was able to finish what he started and scampers in for a 14 yard scoring run up the middle on his fifth carry of the seven-play drive.
The Scots added another score late in the 3rd quarter. Rains'Â 4 yard touchdown run completed a clock-eating 15, play, 82-yard drive to give the Scots a 28-3 lead.
Ray came up with key runs early in the fourth quarter to keep the chains moving before Shields' big 27 yard reception moved the Scots into Grinnell territory with a first down. Willis capped off the drive with his first TD reception as a Scot with a touchdown.Â
Danny Muzzalupo finished off the Scots' scoring in the fourth quarter with a career long 42 yard field goal to make the final the score to 38-3. Over the past four years.
