Box Score Trent Rains racked up a career high 189 yards on a school-record 41 carries and scored two touchdowns as Monmouth rolled by Cornell 38-21 Saturday at April Zorn Memorial Stadium.
With the combined effort of
KeShon Young, who ran for 78 yards on just 10 carries, and the arm of quarterback
Alec Dutko who threw for 215 yards and a score, the Scots outgained the Rams 465-354.
Monmouth's defense also picked off three passes in the fourth quarter to kill the Rams' threat. The interceptions by
Jeff Larsen,
Nyle Stevens and
Alex Sheppard in the final frame each came with the Scots nursing a 31-21 lead and Cornell driving.
The Scots got on the boards first when
KeShon Young's 50 yard run in the first quarter put the Scots at the Cornell 12 yard line. Rains finished the 98-yard drive on the next play for his fist of two touchdowns.
Dutko's quarterback sneak midway through the second quarter gave the Scots a 14-0 lead. Monmouth wrapped up their first half scoring on an
Ace Henricks 37 yard field goal to make the score 17 to 7. Cornell answered, capping a seven-play, 75-yard drive with a 33-yard TD run by Daniel Brown to trim the Scots' lead to 17-14 with 14 seconds left in the half.
Monmouth regained a 10-point edge on their first possession of the third quarter. Easton Shaber's 1
st down reception put the ball at the Rams' three yard line. The drive was capped off when
Jake Innis hauled in a Dutko pass for the TD. The Rams answered on their ensuing possession. Aided by a 41-yard kickoff return by Ben Knake, the Rams scored just six plays later to cut the Scots lead to 24-21.
After a big 15-yard reception by
C.J. Shields to keep the chains moving early in the fourth quarter, Rains was at it again. He followed a 17 yard run with a one yard plunge into the end zone for a 31-21 Monmouth lead.
Dutko later hit
Raysean Parker for a touchdown with 2:45 left to give the Scots the final margin.
