Women run by defending league champions 84-62

Box Score Six Fighting Scots scored in double figures as Monmouth ran by defending Midwest Conference Champion Cornell 84-62 Saturday at Glennie Gym and moved into a four-way tie for third in the MWC.

Monmouth jumped out to a 10-0 lead, but then had to fight off the Rams midway through the first half. Cornell went on a 17-6 run after being held scoreless over the first five minutes of the game, but their lead was short-lived. A free throw by Kathleen Forrest knotted the game at 17-17 and a pair of Jacquice Cooper free throws on Monmouth's next possession gave the Scots a two point lead.

After Cornell tied the game at 19-19 with 6:13 left in the first half, the Scots built a six point halftime lead, hitting seven of their nine shots down the stretch to take a 35-29 lead.

Monmouth hit 20 of their 36 second half shots to keep Cornell at a distance as the Rams could only get within five at 47-42 five minutes into the second half. Cooper's jumper midway through the half started a 15-4 Monmouth run as the Scots stretched their lead to 20 with 5:13 left on an old-fashioned three point play by Katie Houston.

Paige Nord narrowly missed a double-double for the Scots with a game-high 16 points while pulling down nine rebounds. Copper added 14 poitns whiel Kaley Corban added 12, Forrest scored 11 and Kim Coleman and Marla Willard chipped in 10 each.
