Men lead wire-to-wire, vault into second in league standings

Box Score Monmouth held Cornell scoreless for the first eight minutes of the game en route to a 69-53 win over the Rams Saturday afternoon, vaulting the Scots to second place in the Midwest Conference standings.

Cole Jackson scored five of his 10 points in the first four minutes as the Scots opened the game with an 11-0 run to lead from wire-to-wire. The Rams trimmed their deficit to seven at 17-10 with 10 minutes left in the first half, but the Scots answered when Nick Marema scored inside on his way to a game-high 17 points to begin an 8-0 run. Brandon Harroun's 3-pointer gave Monmouth an 11 point lead at 37-26 at halftime.

The Scots then opened the second half with a 9-0 run and took their biggest lead of the day at 22 points on a pair of Andrew Mathison free throws with 10 minutes left in the game. Cornell twice trimmed the Monmouth lead to 13 in the final five minutes, but the Scots answered each Ram rally, hitting five of six free throws in the final minutes to pick up their fourth conference win.
