Late rally falls short as Scots go down in opener

Box Score The Fighting Scots' come-from-behind bid fell just short when Coe's Mitch Montgomery intercepted a Brik Wedekind pass at the Coe 42 with 1:56 left in the game, handing Monmouth a 23-22 season-opening loss.

The Scots started their march from their own 20 and moved downfield thanks 14 yards on three carries from Trey Yocum to pick up a first down and a critical third down reception in traffic by Austin Peterson at the Kohawks' 41. Coe then picked off Wedekind and ran the clocked out as Monmouth ran out of timeouts.

Monmouth had rallied from a 23-13 deficit midway through the third quarter when Ace Henricks' 29-yard field goal trimmed the Coe lead to 23-16. Yocum then capped a 77 yard Scots' drive with a three yard run for a TD, but the extra point was blocked, leaving the Scots in a 23-22 hole with 7:10 left in the game.

Yocum churned out 96 yards rushing while Wedekind was 20-of-34 with two interceptions for 267 yards and one touchdown, a 49-yard bomb to C.J. Shields.
