The Monmouth College men’s tennis team punched their ticket to the team portion of next weekend’s Midwest Conference Championships for the third year in a row with a 6-3 win over Cornell.
With the winner of Sunday’s match earning the MWC berth, the Scots posted two quick doubles wins. David Johnson and David Stewart scored an 8-1 win at No. 1 while brothers Chris and Marco Franco earned an 8-3 victory at No. 2.
Leading 2-1 going into singles play, Monmouth swept the top four singles matches to clinch the postseason berth. Chris Franco didn’t drop a game in a straight set win at No. 1 singles while Johnson won at No. 2 6-2, 6-0. Stewart and Marco Franco then each earned 6-2, 6-2 wins at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively.
Monmouth will begin the conference tournament on Friday in Madison, Wis., as the No. 2 seed in the conference’s South Division.
