Men's Tennis clinches third straight MWC Tournament berth

The Monmouth College men’s tennis team punched their ticket to the team portion of next weekend’s Midwest Conference Championships for the third year in a row with a 6-3 win over Cornell.

With the winner of Sunday’s match earning the MWC berth, the Scots posted two quick doubles wins. David Johnson and David Stewart scored an 8-1 win at No. 1 while brothers Chris and Marco Franco earned an 8-3 victory at No. 2.

Leading 2-1 going into singles play, Monmouth swept the top four singles matches to clinch the postseason berth. Chris Franco didn’t drop a game in a straight set win at No. 1 singles while Johnson won at No. 2 6-2, 6-0. Stewart and Marco Franco then each earned 6-2, 6-2 wins at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively.

Monmouth will begin the conference tournament on Friday in Madison, Wis., as the No. 2 seed in the conference’s South Division.
