Men's Tennis cuts down Lake Forest

Monmouth’s Nos. 1 and 2 doubles teams each won their eighth straight in Friday’s 6-3 team win over Lake Forest.

The addition of Cornell to the league this year bumped Lake Forest into the North Division, meaning the team competition would have no bearing on the MWC standings, but the doubles and singles matches would count when it comes to seeding the league tournament at the end of April. The Scots’ win made Good Friday a REALY good Friday, even if the Foresters are no longer in the Midwest Conference’s South Division.

The Scots rolled through the doubles competition and entered singles play up 2-1. The No. 1 doubles team of David Stewart and David Johnson and the No. 2 squad of Chris Franco and Marco Franco rolled to 8-0 wins. Battling at No. 3, Alex King and Andrew Shiakallis nearly made it a sweep, but fell 9-7.

Wins at 2, 3 and 4 singles earned the Scots the team win as Shiakallis posted a straight set win at No. 6 for good measure. Stewart and Chris Franco also won in straight sets. It was Franco’s fourth straight win.

The singles match of the day came at No. 4 where Marco Franco was able to grind out a three set win. After winning the opening set 6-1, Franco found the tables turned in Set 2, falling 6-2. The younger Franco then geared up his game in the tie-breaker, winning 6-0.
