Box Score Monmouth’s record-setting season came to a close with a 63-52 loss to Cornell in the title game of the Midwest Conference Tournament.
Cornell capitalized on a Monmouth scoring drought, breaking away from a 14-13 deficit to take a 29-18 lead after the Scots went cold midway through the first half.
Paige Nord had given the Scots a quick lead with a 3-pointer on Monmouth’s first possession. Zipporah Williams and Kim Coleman followed with buckets on the next two possessions to take a 7-4 lead before the Rams got their offense rolling.
Cornell hit three straight baskets after Monmouth had gained the 14-13 lead, the Scots’ last lead of the game. Cold shooting in the first half, just 9-of-33, kept Monmouth at bay.
Trailing by as many as 26 in the second half, the Scots rallied, cutting the margin to 13 at 60-47 with 2:16 to play on a Williams jumper, but the Rams hit three of their next four free throws to ice the game. A three by Colleen Forrest and a bucket by Marla Willard ended the Scots scoring in the final minute.
Willard finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Williams ended her career with 14 points.
Monmouth ended the season 20-4, the first 20-win season in school history.
