Swimming in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Wednesday, the Monmouth College swim team broke one school record and turned in eight personal bests while swimming against larger competition.
The Fighting Scots weren’t intimidated in the pool against Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a Division II school. IUP won both team competitions, but the Scots earned two individual wins in the free style events.
Gabe Baginski and Neal Hosper touched first for Monmouth’s individual wins. Baginski’s 22.31 in the 50-yard freestyle was nearly eight-tenths faster than the IUP runner up. Brett Dunn took third in the race with a time of 23.85. Baginski also placed second in the 50 fly in 24.47.
Hosper followed Baginski’s lead, taking first in the 100 free. His time of 51.13 was more than a second ahead of the Division II competition.
Swimming in the 50 breaststroke and the 200 free, Erica McAloon placed second and third, respectively. Her time of 32.59 was less than a second off the pace of the breaststroke while she was a solid third in the free with a time of 2:10.46.
A pair of third place finishes was turned in by Erin Willhite. The sophomore clocked a 26.20 in the 50 free and 100 free time of 57.87 was just 12 one-hundredths out of second.
The Scots swam a trio of personal-bests in the women’s 100 individual medley, including a school record. Amanda Zaidel broke the team record with a 1:09.56 to place fourth, just ahead of Breanna Hoepfner in fifth (1:14.16) and Simone Padron-Glass who swam an exhibition race (1:24.59).
The men followed the women’s lead with three PRs in their 100 IM. Zach Heilman was just a half-second off the school record after placing fourth with a career-best 1:01.81. James Corbiel (1:06.37) and Chris Falkenrath (1:07.62) finished 5-6.
Three more lifetime-bests were turned in in the 50 backstroke. Joren Seibert clocked a 28.67 in the men’s event, placing third while Taylor Sutschek was fifth in the women’s race (32.56) and Morgan Breuss (33.31) took seventh.
Monmouth will be back in their own pool on Jan. 19 when they host Illinois College and Knox.
