Swimmers sweep Big Blue

The Monmouth College swimming and diving team picked up two more wins Saturday as the Scots women edged Millikin 107-89 and Monmouth’s men posted a 111-49 dual meet win.
      The teams combined to win 16 of 22 events and ruled the freestyle events, winning all but two freestyle races and posted wins in most of the 200 yard events.
      In the 50 and 100 freestyles, Erin Willhite earned wins and Clarissa Henby posted personal-bests for a runner up finish for the second week in a row. Willhite clocked a 26.25 in the 50, edging Henby’s PR by nine one-hundredths. In the 100, Willhite touched in 56.63 to clip Henby’s lifetime best of 57.44.
      Two more freestyle wins on the women’s side were collected by Steph Komaniecki who clocked an 11:43.00 in the 1000 free and Erica McAloon who touched first in the 200 free with a time of 2:07.24. McAloon also owned the 200 breaststroke, winning in 2:38.35.
      Freshman Morgan Breuss helped Monmouth’s dominance in the 200 yard races. She finished more than a second ahead of the runner up in the 200 backstroke, winning in 2:26.25.
      Monmouth’s women picked up their fourth win at 200 yards, winning the 200 freestyle relay. Henby, Willhite, Komaniecki and Taylor Sutschek clocked an honor roll time of 1:46.22 to win by more than 10 seconds.
      The men’s squad opened the individual swims with a win in the 1000 freestyle where Neal Hosper posted a personal-best time of 1:58.14. Gabe Baginski then picked up a pair of freestyle wins, winning the 50 by more than two seconds in 22.78 and touching first in the 100 with a time of 50.33. Tony Marino rounded out the freestyle wins with a 2:01.03 to take first in the 200 freestyle.
       Joren Seibert logged two 200-yard wins. He swam a 2:09.34 to win the 200 IM by 15 seconds and then clocked a 2:13.40 to win the 200 backstroke. Zach Heilman added to the win total in the 200 breaststroke, clocking a 2:32.35.
      Both of the men’s relays earned wins. Baginski, Heilman, Seibert and Hosper swam a 1:45.43 to win the 200 medley while Hosper, Seibert, Baginski and Marino took the win in the 200 free relay with a 1:34.34.
      The Scots will host Western Illinois University and Augustana on Feb. 2 in their final home meet of the season. The Midwest Conference Championships are set for Feb. 15-17.
