Women defeat Grinnell, pull into a tie for second in the league

Box Score Monmouth pulled into a tie for second place in the Midwest Conference after posting a 73-55 win over Grinnell.
The Fighting Scots scored the game’s first seven points and never trailed. Kaley Corban and Zipporah Williams put the Scots up early with a pair of buckets in the lane and a 3-pointer from Colleen Forrest gave the Scots a quick 7-0 lead.
Grinnell rallied from a 19-point deficit and halftime, cutting the hole to 48-41 with 10:51 left in the game. The Pioneers slowly closed the gap hitting a 3-ball to start the second half and taking advantage of eight Monmouth turnovers in the first eight minutes of the half.
Forrest stopped the bleeding, draining three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt. Marla Willard then pulled a pair of defensive rebounds sandwiched around a layup on the way to a double-double to put the Scots up 53-41 with 9:56 left.
The Scots were then able to keep the Pioneers at bay, maintaining at least an 11 point lead the rest of the way.
Willard posted 13 points and 11 rebounds while Williams scored a game-high 16 points. Paige Nord added 15 and Corban finished with 10.
Monmouth’s win coupled with Lake Forest’s 52-34 over St. Norbert puts the Scots and Green Knights in a deadlock for second in the league.
