Willard breaks block record as women put up 51 second half points to win fifth straight

Box Score Monmouth rolled to their fifth straight win, downing Illinois College 72-63 in the Scots’ Midwest Conference opener.
After shooting just 24 percent in the first half to find themselves trailing 32-21 at the break, Monmouth came out firing in the second half, canning 16 of their 27 shots on their way to a 51 point second half. Zipporah Williams opened the half hitting her first shot on the way to 10-point, 14 rebound night. Colleen Forrest then drained a 3-pointer and the Scots had closed the gap to six points in less than two minutes.
The Scots took the lead for good when Paige Nord and Williams hit back-to-back buckets in the paint as the game closed in on the 11 minute mark. Kaley Corban’s trey with 7:18 gave Monmouth a 10-point cushion as the Lady Blues never got closer than six points the rest of the way.
Marla Willard’s second half block gave her the all-time record at 79, eclipsing coach Melissa Bittner’s record set from 1999-2003. Nord pumped in 15 points and Forrest added 10.
