The Monmouth College swimming and diving team turned in five personal-best and three honor roll performances at Friday’s dual meet with Augustana.
Monmouth dropped both sides of the team competition, but five swimmers turned in winning performances in seven events. Four of the wins came from newcomers to the Scots’ program as the team took first in six of the 10 individual freestyle events.
Freshman Steph Komaniecki and junior Gabe Baginski accounted for four of the six wins in the freestyle races. Komaniecki clocked personal-bests to win the 1,000-yard free by 10 seconds in 11:40.91 and the 500 free in 5:39.94.
Baginski out-touched the runner up in the 200 free to post a 1:48.41, winning by just three-tenths of a second. His margin of victory was even smaller in the 500 where he clocked a 5:03.21 to win by 14-hundreths.
Newcomer Tony Marino recorded a lifetime-best in the 1,000 free. The junior outlasted the competition and touched first in 10:59.15 to win by five seconds.
Erin Willhite won the 100 freestyle and managed time that ranked in the Scots’ top 10. The sophomore swam a 56.89 to pick up the win by one-half second to make Monmouth’s all-time honor roll.
Morgan Bruess picked up the Scots’ only win that did not come in a freestyle race. The freshman won the 100 backstroke by nearly two full seconds, swimming a 1:08.85.
Diver Clarissa Henby did double duty again in the diving well and in the pool. The sophomore posted an honor roll score of 183.45 in the 1-meter competition to finish third. She then clocked a 1:07.90 in the 100 butterfly to take third and become the seventh-fastest Monmouth woman all-time in the 100 fly. Freshman Breanna Hoepfner clocked a personal-best 1:07.93 to finish just behind Henby.
Monmouth’s women wrapped up their portion of the meet, placing second in the 200 free relay after posting an honor roll time. Willhite, Komanieck, Taylor Sutschek and Erica McAloon clocked a 1:46.42 for a Monmouth top 10 time.
The Scots will take Thanksgiving week off before traveling to Grinnell, Iowa, for the Pioneer Classic on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.
