After a stellar career at Monmouth as a student-athlete, Jon Welty is now plying his talents as the head cross country coach and assistant track coach. Welty enters his sixth season leading the cross country program this fall after taking the helm in 2015. He had been an assistant beginning in 2012 before his promotion to head coach three years later.
As the head coach, Welty has steadily guided the Scots up the ranks. His women ran to runner up finishes at the Midwest Conference Championships in 2018 and 2019 claiming five all-league performances each year. The men surged in 2016, finishing second at the MWC meet after being seeded seventh in the preseason coaches’ poll. They returned to the runner up finish in 2019 when junior Griff Morrill surprised the field with a second-place individual finish.
In his three seasons as an assistant on the cross country coaching staff, the Scots earned five all-region honors and produced one All-American. The success has continued for Welty as head coach as the Scots have earned 19 all-conference honors in his first four seasons.
A four-year member of the cross country and track and field teams, Welty was a three-time all-conference performer in cross country and in track claimed the Midwest Conference steeplechase title as a senior. He was also named academic all-conference his junior year.
When Welty isn't training the college's distance runners, he's training himself for triathlons. Welty found a new pastime in early June of 2020, wedding Julianna Graf - also a Monmouth alum and an admissions representative for the college.
Welty graduated Monmouth with degrees in business and public relations. He earned his Masters in sport management from Western Illinois University.
