Tanner Johnson joined the Monmouth track and field teams as an assistant coach in July 23. Johnson will focus on coaching the jumpers with both the men and women's teams.Â
Johnson was a graduate assistant at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. Prior to that he was a student assistant at Central College (IA) for the 2020-21 season.Â
Johnson graduated from Central College with a degree in exercise Science in 2021. He earned a masters in Leadership, specialized in Exercise Science from Truman State in 2023.Â
A native of Gallatin, Missouri, Johnson was a pole vaulter at Central College and he also threw the javelin. He was first team all-conference pole vaulter in the American Rivers Conference in 2021 and USTFCCCA All-Central Region in 2021. Johnson earned IIAC/ARC all-conference awards from 2018-21 for indoor and outdoor pole vault.Â
Johnson jumped a career-best 4.55m (14' 11") at the 2021 Spartan Invitational. He finished fourth or better in five of his seven conference championship events in the pole vault and also took fourth in the javelin at the 2021 ARC Championships.Â
Coach Johnson lives in Monmouth with his girlfriend Michelle who works in the MC admissions office. In his spare time, Johnson loves to go bass fishing.Â
