The Monmouth College women's soccer team moved into fourth place in the Midwest Conference standings with a 3-2 road win at Cornell on Saturday. With one game to play, the Fighting Scots (7-5-3, 3-2-2) control their own destiny to make the MWC Tournament. The Scots will host first-place and nationally ranked Lake Forest next Saturday and will clinch with a win or tie, or Grinnell non win at Knox.
"We didn't make it easy on ourselves but we found a way," said head coach
Lucas Henderson. "We had a lot of players out there battling through injury, Allison, Lauren, Mariah all fought through something to be out there today."
Cornell took the lead in the 20th minute with their third conference goal of the season. The Scots battled back and tied the game 10 minutes later.
Lauren DellaValle (Peoria, Illinois) fed
Mariah Hobson (Princeton, Illinois) who beat the Rams keeper with a shot to the right corner. Neither team scored over the next 15 minutes as Monmouth goalkeeper
Izzy Seipold (Peoria, Illinois) made five saves in the first half.
Four minutes into the second half, Hobson put the Scots on top 2-1 with an unassisted goal. Two minutes later, Hobson turned provider as she assisted
Morgan Kistler's (Kokomo, Indiana) 10th goal of the season for a 3-1 Monmouth lead. The Rams got on the board again with 25 minutes to play. Seipold made eight saves in the second half to keep the Scots on top.Â
"Lauren jump started two of our goals and Mariah and Morgan made the difference in the scoresheet," said Henderson.
