The Monmouth College softball team dropped their home opener on Saturday with a 14-6 loss to Greenville. The Scots also lost the second game of the doubleheader, 7-0.
The Panthers took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Monmouth answered in the bottom of the inning to pull even.
Karliegh Ashby (Monmouth, Illinois) led off with a single and
Lillian Hucke (Aledo, Illinois) singled to put runners on the corners. Hucke stole second and Ashby scored on a single by
Grace Wyman (Pekin, Illinois). With the bases loaded,
Kendall Lewis (Cambridge, Illinois) tied the game with a two-run single.
Greenville scored nine unanswered to lead 12-3 in the fifth. The Scots kept the game going with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Lewis doubled with one out and
Jordan Lantz (Alexis, Illinois) walked as Lewis stole third. Kayliegh Cobb (Pawnee, Illinois) singled home a run and
Grace Goodrich (Lake Villa, Illinois) doubled home Lantz. Ashby's single made it 12-6 before the Panthers got out of the inning.
Two runs in the top of the sixth put the visitors on top 14-6. Lewis walked but the Scots left her on base in the bottom of the sixth as the game ended on the mercy rule.
Greenville scored three in the first inning of game two and pushed the lead to 7-0 after four innings. The Scots got their first hit of the game with two outs in the fifth as
Addison Narlock (Antioch, Illinois) singled. The Scots got another hit in the sixth when Wyman doubled with two down but they weren't able to score.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Lewis, Ashby and Wyman all had two hits in game one…Lewis had two RBI and also walked…Wyman had a hit in both games and has hit safely in four straight…She has extra-base hits in three of those games…Monmouth plays another home non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. against Blackburn.
