Durfee, Leber Shine as Scots Split DH

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Monmouth College softball team split games on Tuesday, falling to Geneva 1-0 and beating Simmons 4-0.

The game went into the third scoreless and Scots pitcher Abby Leber (Tremont, Illinois) recorded two quick outs. The Tornadoes leadoff batter doubled to left and scored under the tag on a throw from left as the next batter singled.

In the top of the fourth, Leber made history as she got the Geneva sixth hitter to strikeout swinging. The strikeout, her fourth of the day, was the 200th of Leber's three-year career and she's just the fifth pitcher in Monmouth history to reach the milestone.

Geneva kept the Scots off the basepaths with some strong defensive plays in the first five innings. They had two grounders knocked down by the pitcher for outs, a diving catch in foul territory at first base, a diving catch on a grounder by the shortstop and a leaping catch of a line drive by the second baseman.

After being robbed by her counterpart to end the fifth, Monmouth shortstop Kendall Lewis (Cambridge, Illinois) made a diving stop to start the sixth and threw from her knees to get the Geneva runner at first. MyKenzie Kloess (Dupo, Illinois) was in full stretch at first base to secure the first out of the inning. With two on and two out, Lillian Hucke (Aledo, Illinois) made a tremendous diving catch in right field to keep the game 1-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Monmouth got their first hit of the game. With two down, Hucke again used her speed to get on base, beating out a throw from shortstop but the Scots were unable to extend the inning further. Leber made a great catch of a line drive comebacker to end the top of the seventh but the Scots were retired in order to end the game.

Leber (1-2) racked up two more strikeouts to pass Kim Buckert ('88) for fourth on the Monmouth strikeout list. Next up for her is Sarah Christensen ('09) with 276 career strikeouts. Liz Hippen ('18) holds the record with 529. Leber also recorded her 18th career complete game.

Monmouth opened the second game with a run in the top of the first. With two down, Kloess walked and Olivia Riddley (Chatham, Illinois) was hit by a pitch. Madelyn Belville (Rushville, Illinois) singled through the right side for a 1-0 Scots lead.

Monmouth added to the lead in the third. Kloess walked and moved to second on a wild pitch before Belville walked. Kloess took third on an error and with two down, Belville took off for second. When the catcher threw down, Kloess stole home for a 2-0 lead. Addison Riley (Illinois City, Illinois) singled to center but Simmons threw out Belville at the plate to end the inning.

Through the first four innings, freshman pitcher Elizabeth Durfee (Arlington, Washington) struck out three and allowed just two base runners, both on walks. She doubled off one of those runners on a line drive back to the circle. The other runner moved to second on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first but was stranded there.

In the fifth, the Sharks drew a two-out walk and a wild pitch put a runner on second. They got their first hit of the game on a comebacker that Durfee deflected but no one could get in time to record an out. A stolen base put the tying run in scoring position but Durfee recorded a strikeout looking to end the inning.

Durfee retired the Sharks in order in the sixth, again finishing the inning with a strikeout looking. Calista Warmowski (Spring Grove, Illinois) led off the seventh with a single, her second hit of the game and Kloess singled. A double to left by Riddley scored both runners and put the Scots on top 4-0. Vanessa Wright (Villa Grove, Illinois) pinch-ran for Riddley and moved to third on a groundout. Belville walked but the Scots left two runners on base.

Durfee (1-2) issued a walk but got through the seventh for her first career win. With six strikeouts, Durfee set a new season and career high as she also finished her second complete game.

Last season Simmons beat Monmouth 6-1 on the Florida trip while the Scots and Geneva hadn't met in Florida before Tuesday. The Scots have the day off Wednesday and return to action at the Diamondplex in Winter Haven, Florida on Thursday. Monmouth faces Russell Sage College at 9 a.m. ET and Pitt-Greensburg at 2 p.m. ET.
