Box Score 2 The Monmouth College softball team picked up their first win of the season with a split on Sunday. The Scots (1-3) beat Defiance College 6-5 in extra innings in the opener before falling to Carroll University 2-0.
Against Defiance, the Scots got off to a great start.
Addison Riley (Illinois City, Illinois) reached on an error in the second inning and
Vanessa Wright (Villa Grove, Illinois) singled. With one out,
Olivia Riddley (Chatham, Illinois) doubled for a 2-0 Monmouth lead.
Leading 2-1, Monmouth added on in the fourth. Riley was hit by a pitch, Wright singled and Riddley walked to load the bases. An error scored Riley to put the Scots on top 3-1 before Defiance got out of the inning.
The Scots added another run in the fifth.
Madelyn Belville (Rushville, Illinois) led off with a single and stole second. With one out,
MyKenzie Kloess (Dupo, Illinois) singled and stole second. Wright singled to bring home Kloess for a 4-1 Monmouth lead.
Defiance scored three in the fifth to tie the game and
Kayleigh Cobb (Pawnee, Illinois) replaced
Abby Leber (Tremont, Illinois) in the circle. She got out of the inning and neither team scored in the sixth or seventh.
Riley started the eighth inning as the courtesy runner on second base. Wright tripled, her fourth hit of the game, to give the Scots a 5-4 lead but they didn't score again. Defiance also scored their courtesy runner off reliever
Anna McCarty (Decatur, Illinois) in the eighth.
Calista Warmowski (Spring Grove, Illinois) started the ninth as the courtesy runner and shove moved to third on a sac bunt. With two down, Cobb doubled home Warmowski and McCarty stranded the Defiance courtesy runner in the ninth to secure the win.
McCarty (1-0) got the win with no earned runs allowed over two innings while Leber allowed two earned runs in four innings and struck out six. Wright had four hits and two RBI and Riddley added a two-run double.
In game two, Carroll scored both of their runs with a two-out rally in the third. A single, triple and double plated a pair against
Elizabeth Durfee (Arlington, Washington).
Riddley had a single for the Scots in the bottom of the second but Monmouth left two runners on base. Their other hit came in the seventh when Kloess had a one-out, pinch-hit double.
Durfee (0-2) had her first collegiate complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits over seven innings and striking out two.
The Scots are now off until Monday, March 6 when they start their spring break games in Florida, Monmouth will play eight games the week of March 6-10.
