Monmouth Alum Writes Book on D2 Mascots

Following the positive reception to his first sports history book last fall, Chris Pio '84 announces the release of the second installment of his Nicknames and Mascots series. Gorillas, Gators and Greyhounds: The NCAA Division II Nickname and Mascot Menagerie, which contains stories from over 300  colleges and universities in the next tier of the NCAA, was released on the Amazon Books marketplace over the Labor Day weekend and is now available for immediate purchase by the general public.

Similar in scope to its predecessor, the new book relates the history, evolution and relevant meaning of each Division II school's athletic nickname and current mascot. The diversity of characters and logos within the group, which includes institutions from 44 states as well as Puerto Rico and Canada, is showcased by nearly 100 photos and graphic images.

The series opened with the publication of the definitive small-college collection Gryphons, Gorloks & Gusties: A History of NCAA Division III Nicknames and Mascots in September 2021 and will continue with a volume on Division I schools tentatively planned for release a year from now. "These books are as much about history as they are about athletics. The variety of facts and stories are entertaining for all sports fans, young and old alike."
