The Monmouth College softball team lost both games of a double header at Illinois Wesleyan on Thursday. The Titans took game one 8-0 in five innings and rallied past the Scots 6-5 with a walk-off hit in the seventh inning of game two.
The opener was all Illinois Wesleyan as the Scots only hit was a double by
Jessica Pauley (Moline, Illinois) in the first inning. IWU catcher Hayley Earl hit two homers, including a grand slam, and drove in six runs. Scots starting pitcher
Abby Leber (Tremont, Illinois) struck out seven in 4 1/3 innings.
The hosts grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in game two. The Scots took their first lead of the day in the top of the second.
Makaylea Sepich (Mackinaw, Illinois) singled to start the inning and
Allie Ramlo (Tremont, Illinois) singled. Pitcher
Jenna Pauley (Moline, Illinois) helped her own cause with a 3-run homer to put Monmouth on top 3-1.
An inning later,
Jessica Pauley tripled with one out and was lifted for pinch-runner
Alex Chamberlin (Canton, Illinois). Sepich put the Scots up 4-1 with a RBI groundout as Chamberlin scored.
IWU cut the Monmouth lead to 4-2 in the fourth and took a 5-4 lead on a 3-run home run in the sixth inning. The Scots tied the game in the top of the seventh.
Anna McCarty (Buffalo, Illinois) led off with a single and moved to third on a groundout and an error.
Addison Riley (Illinois City, Illinois) toed the game with a sacrifice fly but the Scots left the go-ahead run at third base. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, IWU got a double and then a two-out single to win the game 6-5.
The Scots are next in action at home on Sunday against Simpson College. Originally scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, the double header will now begin at 2 p.m. in an effort for warmer weather.
