Game Recap: Softball | | Nathan Baliva

Softball Battles but Loses to Cornell

The Monmouth College softball teams let a couple of early leads get away as they lost both games of a double header by the score of 7-6 to Cornell College on Saturday. Playing as the visiting team on their home field, the Scots were walked off in both games with game two going 10 innings. 

 

In the first game the Scots slugged their way to a 6-0 lead. MyKenzie Kloess (Dupo, Illinois) started the scoring with a triple in the third to score Calista Warmowski (Spring Grove, Illinois). A single from pitcher Abby Leber (Tremont, Illinois) scored Kloess for a 2-0 Scots lead. 
 
Monmouth put two on base in the top of the fourth via walk and error. Warmowski singled to load the bases and Kloess made it 3-0 with a RBI single. Makayla Sepich (Mackinaw, Illinois) scored on a RBI groundout from Jessica Pauley (Moline, Illinois) as the Scots went on top 4-0.
 
Sarah LaHood (East Peoria, Illinois) led off the Scots fifth with a single and Alex Chamberlin (Canton, Illinois) pinch ran. Addison Riley (Illinois City, Illinois) singled and both runners scored on an error as Brittney Enos (Fisher, Illinois) hit the ball to shortstop as the Scots took a 6-0 lead. 
 
Cornell got on the board with as bases-clearing double in the fifth following an error. The Scots led 6-3 into the bottom of the seventh. Cornell picked up two straight one-out singles and a run scored on an error. Rebecca Merletti (Kenosha, Wisconsin) took over on the mound and allowed a single that loaded the bases. A single and an error scored two as Cornell tied the game. Leber came back to the mound and Cornell won the game on a sacrifice fly. 
 
The Scots grabbed the lead in game two as well. Warmowski reached on an error and advance on a wild pitch. With one out she scored from third on a RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Jessica Pauley. 
 
In the second inning Madelyn Belville (Rushville, Illinois) walked and two errors loaded the bases. Kloess delivered again with a two-run single as the Scots took a 3-0 lead. Riley walked and scored on an error in the third as the Scots went on top 4-0.
 
Cornell got one back in the third against Jenna Pauley (Moline, Illinois). They tied the game on three hits and an error in the fourth before Emilie Cain (Lake Villa, Illinois) took over on the mound and escaped the inning. The Rams grabbed the lead in the fifth with one run scoring on an error and another on a wild pitch. 
 
Monmouth tied the game in the sixth. LaHood doubled, Enos walked and with one out Kloess reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Jessica Pauley doubled to score Enos and LaHood for a 6-6 score. The Scots left two in scoring position and the game stayed tied until the 10th inning. 
 
In the 10th the Rams got a leadoff single before an error put runners at first and second. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up one base and a wild pitch gave Cornell a 7-6 win.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Jessica Pauley's double in game one was the 17th of her career, tied for 20th on the Monmouth career list...With three RBI  on the day she is one shy of the top 20 on Monmouth's career list...Warmowski had hits in both games and three on the day...Leber had two hits in both games and Lahood had one hit in each game...Lillian Hucke (Aledo, Illinois) delivered a pinch-hit double in game two...Both teams had nine errors on the day...Monmouth is next in action with a double header starting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at illinois College...The next home game is a 1 p.m. double header on Saturday, April 24 against Knox College.
