TWO INNINGS SINKS SOFTBALLERS ON OPENING DAY

Two innings in each game put Monmouth in an 0-2 hole Sunday in Clermont, Fla., as the Scots dropped their season-opener 10-3 to Eastern Nazarene College and then fell in the bottom of the seventh to Alvernia University 6-5.

Nazarene used a six-run second in the opener for all the runs they would need. The Lions banged out five hits in the inning and took advantage of a Fighting Scots' error to make the run. Monmouth scratched out a run in the third when Alison Trettin's double plated Angela Schaumburg to narrow the game to 6-1. The Scots tallied two more in the sixth after Jenna Pauley and Trettin opened the inning with back-to-back singles and came home on an Alexis Opel double. Monmouth's comeback ended when the Lions retired the final five batters in the order. Cassidy Abbott suffered the loss in the circle, surrendering six hits in three innings of work.

Monmouth jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the nightcap vs. Alvernia, but couldn't hold the lead in the late innings. Brittney Enos, Kaelan Bradley and Abbott knocked in two runs each in the third inning to jump out to a 3-1 lead. The Scots added two more runs in the sixth to lead 5-1 going into the bottom of the inning. Alvernia put their first seven batters on in the frame, scoring three to knot the game at 5-5. After setting the Scots down in order in the top of the seventh, Alvernia pushed the tying and winning runs across with a two-run, no-out double. Reliever Hailey Rennick was saddled with the loss after working two-thirds of an inning. The loss offset a 3-for-4 game at the plate for Laura Dulee and a 2-for-2 effort from Abbott.

The Scots face Moravian and Elizabethtown Monday morning in Clermont.
