ONE SHUTOUT, ONE HEARTBREAKER FOR SOFTBALL ON FLORIDA TRIP

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Monmouth posted their second shutout in three games Monday in Clermont, Fla., but also suffered their first defeat during their spring trip.

The Scots got a complete game gem from Liz Hippen who fanned eight in a 7-0 blanking of Carthage in the day's opener. Cassidy Abbott took the hard luck loss in the nightcap when Nebraska Wesleyan scored a pair of unearned runs to handthe Scots a 2-1 loss.

Hippen scattered four hits and walked two against Carthage for her second victory in as many starts. The Scots spotted Hippen a 1-0 lead in the first and added four more in the third, plus two more in the seventh. Becca Gallis supplied three of the Scots' seven hits in the contest.

Abbott was locked in a scoreless duel until the fifth when Nebraska Wesleyan scratched out a single run on an inning-opening error. The Scots got the run back in the sixth when Kaylee Kurtz led off with a double and Gallis plated pinch-runner Gianna Drager with another two-bagger. Monmouth then had runners at second and third with one out before NWU ended the threat with a pair of infield pop ups. Nebraska Wesleyan  retook the lead in the seventh after an error opened the gate for the winning run.
