TWO GOALS THE DIFFERENCE FOR WATER POLO ON GETAWAY SUNDAY

Close games were the rule Sunday at the CWPA Division III Championships in Baltimore, Md., where Monmouth College fell in a pair of one-goal losses.

Quentin Bartram netted the go-ahead goal with 2:41 left in Sunday's opener, a 15-14 overtime loss to Connecticut College. Neither team led by more than one goal in regulation as the Camels led 11-10 late in the fourth quarter before the Scots scored back-to-back goals, the first by Jake Hall to knot the game and then Bartram's net-finder for a 12-11 lead. Connecticut College knotted the game at 12-all with 1:39 left to send the game into overtime.

Monmouth took the early overtime lead at 13-12 on Jesus Aguirre's fifth goal of the game at the 2:32 mark. The Camels answered a minute later with back-to-back goals for a 13-12 lead and held on for the win.

Aguirre and Hall netted four goals each in the weekend's final game, a 16-15 loss to Austin College. Tied 10-10 entering the fourth quarter, the 'Roos built a two-goal lead and staved off the Scots when the teams traded goals over the final four minutes.

The weekend had opened on Saturday with a 16-10 loss to Washington and Jefferson. Aguirre netted a game-high six goals in the contest, but couldn't offset a balanced offense by the Presidents who took a 5-1 lead in the first quarter and were never threatened.

MIT took the championship with a perfect 3-0 record while the host school – Johns Hopkins – was the runner up.

The Scots travel to McKendree University the weekend of Oct. 27 for the McKendree Tournament in Lebanon, Ill.
