Box Score 2 Monmouth and Cornell staged yet another epic battle, this time won by the Rams 3-2 and 7-6.
Trailing 2-0 in the opener, the Scots rallied for two rus in the sixth on
Maggie Hayes' base hit. The Rams defense came through in the inning, twice throwing out runners at the plate. Tied at 2-2, Game 1 headed into extra innings where the Scots threatened in the eighth.
Rebecca Gallis opened with a leadoff walk before the Rams retired the next two batters, but loaded the bases with back-to-back walks. Cornell then induced a ground out to end the inning. Monmouth kept the Rams silent until the ninth when back-to-back hits with two outs scored the winning run for Cornell.
The Scots took advantage of four Rams' error in Game 2, scoring a pair of runs int he second for a quick 2-0 lead.Cornell responded with three runs in the third and another in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Monmouth came back again when
Caitlin Flary stroked a two-out hit to drive in two runs, knotting the game at 4 apiece. A wild pitch ensued and the game moved to the bottom of the sixth with Monmouth leading 5-4. Cornell regained the lead with their second homer of the game, adding just enough insurance runs to hold on for the win.
Now one game out of a Midwest Conference Tournament berth, Monmouth continues their MWC road trip with a Tuesday doubleheader at Grinnell. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
